Overview

La1 + BB536 is a probiotic combination consisting of the bacterial strains *Lactobacillus johnsonii* La1 (also known as NCC 533) and *Bifidobacterium longum* BB536. This formulation has been investigated in clinical research, specifically for perioperative administration in patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer. The combination aims to modulate the intestinal microbiota by reducing the concentration of pathogenic bacteria, such as Enterobacteriaceae, and enhancing local mucosal immunity. In clinical trials, the La1 strain has demonstrated the ability to adhere to the colonic mucosa, whereas BB536 contributes to the overall probiotic effect without significant mucosal adherence. The treatment is intended to improve surgical outcomes by strengthening the intestinal barrier and regulating inflammatory responses.
