Overview

Lactobacillus johnsonii NCC 533 is a probiotic intestinal bacterium extensively studied for its probiotic activities, including pathogen inhibition, epithelial cell attachment, and immunomodulation[9][5][3]. It is used in commercial products such as the yogurt-like dairy product LC1 by Nestlé to support gut health and strengthen natural defenses[3][5]. The strain has been shown to persist longer in the gut compared to other strains of L. johnsonii due to specific genetic adaptations[2]. Its mechanisms include production of lactic acid and bacteriocins, hydrogen peroxide generation with antimicrobial effects against pathogens like Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium SL1344[7][8], synthesis of inulin-type fructans via an inulosucrase enzyme (InuJ)[3][10], and modulation of host immune responses such as reduction of H. pylori-related inflammation and promotion of antimicrobial peptide expression on skin when applied topically[5][6].
