Overview

*Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens* is a non-pathogenic, gram-positive probiotic bacterium primarily isolated from kefir grains. It is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) characterized by its ability to produce kefiran, an extracellular branched water-soluble polysaccharide composed of glucose and galactose. Research, including work by Daiwa Pharmaceutical, indicates that *L. kefiranofaciens* can reprogram the gut microenvironment, repair the intestinal barrier, and provide antioxidant defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It is being investigated for potential therapeutic applications in ulcerative colitis, sepsis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), metabolic disorders, and depression-related symptoms. Various strains, such as M1, KCTC 5075, and ATCC 43761, have been studied for their immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory bioactivities. Recent research has also explored advanced delivery systems, such as prebiotic-augmented nanozyme-armoring, to enhance its efficacy in treating colitis and sepsis.
