Overview

Lactobacillus lactis lysate is a preparation made from the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus lactis, where the bacterial cells have been broken down. It is considered a postbiotic and has been investigated as a topical, microbiome-targeted treatment for skin conditions. A clinical trial (EudraCT 2020-000514-15) evaluated its use in a cream for mild-to-moderate atopic dermatitis. [2] While the cream was found to be well-tolerated, it did not show significant efficacy in improving the signs and symptoms of atopic dermatitis compared to a placebo in a small pilot study. [2, 4, 5] The proposed mechanism involves modulating the skin's microbiome and immune responses to enhance skin barrier function, reduce inflammation, and provide a soothing effect. [3, 7, 8]
