Overview

Lactobacillus paracasei ET22 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain being investigated for its therapeutic potential in managing halitosis (oral malodor). Developed by researchers at China Agricultural University, the strain is typically administered in the form of lozenges containing either live or heat-killed (postbiotic) cells. The mechanism of action involves the modulation of the oral microbiota to suppress the growth of anaerobic bacteria that produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, which are the primary chemical drivers of bad breath. Clinical evaluation of ET22 focuses on reducing VSC levels as measured by Halimeter readings and improving the overall diversity and composition of the salivary microbiome.
