Overview

Lactobacillus paracasei F19 is a specific probiotic strain of bacteria, originally isolated from a healthy human and developed by Arla Foods. [6] It is intended to modulate the gut microbiota, providing health benefits either through direct interaction with host cells or by influencing other bacterial species. [1] The strain has Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status in the US for use in various foods and infant formula (GRN 000810 and 000840). [15] It is marketed in products such as Arla Cultura® yogurt. [11] A clinical study in obese postmenopausal women found that daily intake of 9.4 x 10^10 CFU for six weeks did not significantly improve metabolic markers like insulin sensitivity or lipid profiles compared to placebo, although it did alter the gut microbiota by increasing the relative abundance of *Eubacterium rectale* and *Ruminococcus torques*. Other clinical studies have investigated its effects in different conditions, showing it may be effective in reducing abdominal bloating in symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease and preventing bowel symptoms in patients on long-term proton pump inhibitors. [12, 13] However, a long-term study in children found no effect on dental caries. [9]
