Overview

Lactobacillus paracasei K71 (now also known as Lacticaseibacillus paracasei K71) is a specific probiotic bacterial strain originally isolated from sake lees. It is a gram-positive lactic acid bacterium used in dietary supplements and functional foods for its potential health benefits. Mechanistically, oral administration of this strain has been shown in animal studies to attenuate inflammation by increasing anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 production and modulating immune responses via TLR3 signaling pathways[1]. It can enhance Th1-type immune function by increasing IL-12 and IFN-γ production, boosting NK cell cytotoxicity, and elevating fecal IgA content[4]. In preclinical models, it has demonstrated the ability to alleviate UVB-induced skin barrier dysfunction[1], improve cognitive performance associated with aging through upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in the hippocampus[3], and reduce severity of atopic dermatitis in clinical trials[7]. Its primary indications are as a probiotic for supporting immune health, skin barrier function, cognitive health (in preclinical models), and management of atopic dermatitis.
