Overview

Lactobacillus paragasseri HM018 is a human breast milk-derived probiotic strain developed for the management of hyperlipidemia and related metabolic disorders. It functions by remodeling the gut microbiota, specifically reducing the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and suppressing bile salt hydrolase-producing bacteria. This modulation leads to altered bile acid composition, promoting cholesterol excretion via the reverse cholesterol transport (RCT) and transintestinal cholesterol excretion (TICE) pathways. Additionally, HM018 regulates hepatic and intestinal gene expression, upregulating cholesterol efflux transporters (Abcg5/Abcg8) and apolipoprotein A-I (Apoa1), while downregulating inhibitors of insulin and growth hormone signaling (Socs2, Socs3, Cish), thereby improving lipid and glucose metabolism.
