Overview
Lactobacillus pentosus (recently reclassified as Lactiplantibacillus pentosus) is a species of probiotic lactic acid bacteria. [1] It is administered orally and is being investigated for its potential to modulate the gut microbiome and host immune system. [1, 8] A clinical study in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) investigated its effects on disease severity. [6, 11] While the study did not show a significant benefit over placebo for the overall group, it did note an improvement in subjective symptoms for a subgroup of children with allergen-sensitized AD. [6, 11] Its proposed mechanism involves restoring immune balance, producing antimicrobial substances, and enhancing the intestinal barrier function. [1, 7, 8] It is also studied for other conditions like gastrointestinal disorders, and for its antimicrobial properties in food preservation. [1, 5, 9]
