Overview

Lactobacillus pentosus KCA1 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain originally isolated from the vaginal microbiota of a healthy premenopausal woman. It is characterized as a live biotherapeutic product with metabolic versatility, capable of producing lactic acid and a cyclic bacteriocin designated as pentocin KCA1. The strain is primarily investigated for its ability to modulate the vaginal and gut microbiomes to treat conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) by lowering local pH and displacing pathogens. Additionally, topical applications of KCA1 have been studied for their ability to reduce axillary malodor by decreasing the relative abundance of odor-producing *Corynebacterium* species and downregulating microbial genes encoding pyridoxal phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzymes involved in the production of volatile thioalcohols.
