Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus plantarum + lactobacillus salivarius is a probiotic combination of two live bacterial strains. This specific combination is being investigated in clinical trials for its potential to treat halitosis (bad breath). The proposed mechanism involves modulating the oral microbiome by increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria while reducing odor-producing pathogenic bacteria, such as *Fusobacterium nucleatum*, and consequently lowering the levels of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) which are the primary cause of bad breath. [15, 17, 19] A clinical trial for this indication is sponsored by Wuxi Children's Hospital and Jiangnan University. [23] While this specific two-strain combination has not been identified with a commercial brand name, other probiotic products containing these strains, often in combination with others like *Lactobacillus brevis*, are available for different indications such as bacterial vaginosis.
