Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Lactobacillus plantarum 299v is a specific probiotic bacterial strain of *Lactobacillus plantarum* also referred to as DSM 9843 and more recently *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum* 299v. It is a live microbial therapeutic/nutraceutical used primarily for gastrointestinal health, especially irritable bowel syndrome, and has also been studied clinically as an adjunctive intervention in major depressive disorder and other conditions. Its proposed mechanism is microbiome-mediated rather than receptor-specific: the strain survives gastrointestinal transit, adheres to intestinal mucosa, may improve epithelial barrier integrity, reduce intestinal permeability, modulate local and systemic inflammatory signaling, and alter tryptophan-kynurenine metabolism. Publicly described commercial development has been led by Probi, with products and licensing/distribution partnerships involving companies such as Ipsen, Jamieson, Sanofi, Alvogen, BiO-LiFE, Botanic Pharma, and others in different markets. In the cited randomized placebo-controlled depression study, adjunctive oral LP299v given with SSRI therapy for 8 weeks improved selected cognitive measures and reduced plasma kynurenine versus placebo, without clear antidepressant efficacy on primary mood scales.
