Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of the probiotic bacterium Lactobacillus plantarum 299v and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) sertraline. Lactobacillus plantarum 299v is a probiotic strain that modulates gut microbiota and has been shown to influence tryptophan metabolism, particularly by decreasing kynurenine concentrations, which may contribute to improved cognitive function in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Sertraline is an SSRI antidepressant that increases synaptic serotonin levels by inhibiting its reuptake in the brain, thereby alleviating symptoms of depression. Clinical studies have demonstrated that augmentation of SSRI treatment with Lactobacillus plantarum 299v can improve cognitive performance and reduce kynurenine concentration in MDD patients compared to placebo[2][5][6]. The combination targets both central nervous system neurotransmission (via sertraline) and gut-brain axis modulation (via L. plantarum 299v).
