Overview

*Lactobacillus plantarum* 931 (LB931) is a probiotic bacterial strain, recently reclassified as *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum* 931, that is being investigated as a live biotherapeutic product for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). In clinical research led by the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, the strain is administered as a component of a four-strain Lactobacillus nasal saline rinse (alongside *L. rhamnosus* GG, *L. paracasei* 8700:2, and *L. plantarum* HEAL9) to patients following nasal surgery. The therapeutic rationale is based on the strain's ability to colonize the sinonasal mucosa, restore a healthy microbial balance, and competitively exclude pathogenic bacteria such as *Staphylococcus aureus*. Additionally, LB931 is thought to modulate local inflammatory responses and enhance the mucosal barrier function, potentially reducing the recurrence of symptoms in chronic rhinosinusitis patients.
