Lactobacillus plantarum-derived extracellular vesicles (L-EVs) are nano-sized, membrane-bound vesicles naturally secreted by the probiotic bacterium *Lactobacillus plantarum*. These vesicles act as key mediators in the gut-brain axis, facilitating communication between the intestinal microbiota and the central nervous system. Research indicates that L-EVs possess therapeutic potential for treating Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) by modulating neurobiological pathways associated with addiction. Specifically, administration of L-EVs has been shown to reduce alcohol consumption and withdrawal-related behaviors in animal models by enhancing the expression of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the ventral tegmental area (VTA). This effect is mediated through the activation of the TrkB signaling pathway. Additionally, L-EVs may help restore intestinal barrier integrity and normalize gut microbiota composition, which are often compromised by chronic alcohol consumption.
