Lactobacillus plantarum DP189 is a specific probiotic strain, recently reclassified as *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum* DP189, that is being researched for its potential to treat neurodegenerative disorders, specifically Parkinson's disease. Preclinical studies demonstrate that DP189 can cross the gut-brain axis to reduce the accumulation of alpha-synuclein (α-SYN) aggregates in the substantia nigra. Its mechanism of action involves the activation of the Nrf2/ARE and PGC-1α antioxidant signaling pathways, which increases the production of protective enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). Simultaneously, it suppresses the NLRP3 inflammasome and reduces the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β. Furthermore, DP189 modulates the gut microbiota by decreasing pathogenic bacteria and increasing beneficial probiotic populations.
