Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum extract is an extract derived from the probiotic bacterium *Lactobacillus plantarum*. The ethyl acetate extract from the specific strain ATCC 14917 has been studied for its potential anti-cancer properties. Research has shown that this extract can selectively induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) in human colorectal cancer cells (Caco-2) while leaving healthy cells unharmed. The mechanism of action involves the activation of the intrinsic apoptosis pathway, characterized by the downregulation of anti-apoptotic proteins like Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL, and the upregulation of pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bak, Bad, and Bax. This leads to an increase in the activity of caspases, specifically caspase-3 and caspase-9, ultimately causing cancer cell death. [14] These findings suggest that extracts from *Lactobacillus plantarum* could be considered for development as targeted anti-cancer treatments.
