Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum GL-5 is a specific strain of probiotic bacterium, originally classified as Lactobacillus plantarum but reclassified to Lactiplantibacillus plantarum in 2020. It is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) and is found in fermented foods and the human gastrointestinal tract. This probiotic exerts its beneficial effects through multiple mechanisms, including the inhibition of pathogenic bacteria by producing antimicrobial substances such as organic acids, hydrogen peroxide, and bacteriocins. It also modulates the immune system by enhancing immune responses and influencing cytokine levels (decreasing pro-inflammatory and increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines). Furthermore, it enhances the gut barrier function by promoting the integrity of the intestinal lining and increasing tight junction proteins. Lactobacillus plantarum GL-5 also contributes to gut health by fermenting undigested carbohydrates into beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and exhibits significant antioxidant activity. The GL-5 strain was screened from fermented dairy products in Qinghai, China, and is preserved at the China General Microbiological Culture Collection Center (CGMCC No.18988).
