Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum GL-5 + Lactobacillus plantarum LZU-J-TSL 6 is a psychobiotic combination consisting of two specific strains of the probiotic species *Lactobacillus plantarum* (recently reclassified as *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum*). Developed by researchers at the School of Life Science, Lanzhou University, this microbial therapy is being investigated for its potential to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. The mechanism of action involves the gut-brain axis, where the bacteria modulate the composition of the gut microbiota and increase the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These changes are associated with the restoration of neurotransmitter levels, such as serotonin (5-HT), and the upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus, which collectively reduce neuroinflammation and improve behavioral outcomes in preclinical models.
