Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum HAC03 (also referred to as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HAC03) is a probiotic bacterial strain isolated from Korean white kimchi, currently under preclinical investigation for its anti-obesity properties. As a live biotherapeutic, HAC03 modulates the gut microbiota by restoring microbial diversity and increasing the abundance of specific taxa, such as the Eubacterium coprostanoligenes and Lachnospiraceae UCG groups, which are associated with improved metabolic health. The strain influences key metabolic pathways, including the NAD salvage pathway and starch degradation, and promotes the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). A distinctive feature of HAC03 is its ability to facilitate the bioavailability of dietary flavonoids; it rapidly converts rutin into the more bioavailable and effective metabolite isoquercetin within the ileum. In diet-induced obesity models, HAC03 has demonstrated synergistic weight-reduction effects when co-administered with Garcinia cambogia or rutin, characterized by reduced adipocyte size, suppressed fat synthesis, and enhanced fatty acid beta-oxidation.
