Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum K50 (LPK) is a probiotic bacterial strain isolated from Kimchi and developed by CKD BiO Corp. as a live biotherapeutic product for the treatment of obesity and associated metabolic disorders. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (CKDB156), LPK demonstrated the ability to significantly reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in obese Korean adults over a 12-week period. While the strain did not produce significant changes in body weight or fat mass in this specific study, it favorably modulated the gut microbiome by increasing the abundance of *L. plantarum* and *Enterococcus hirae* and decreasing *Actinobacteria*. These microbial shifts are hypothesized to enhance the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which play a role in regulating lipid metabolism and energy balance.
