Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum Lp90 is a specific strain of the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus plantarum, originally isolated from the Apulian (South of Italy) wine "Nero di Troia"[3]. The Lp90 strain is characterized by a distinctive "ropy" phenotype due to its overproduction of exopolysaccharides (EPS), which may contribute to its functional properties as a probiotic[3]. It is explored for its potential probiotic benefits, including direct antimicrobial activity against a broad range of foodborne and pathogenic microbes, possibly through production of organic acids, hydrogen peroxide, EPS, and bacteriocins[1]. Lp90 has shown potential as a biopreservative agent for the food industry and as an alternative biotherapeutic in medicine[1]. In vitro, it can stimulate elastin protein expression when topically applied to human skin tissue, suggesting possible dermatological benefits[4]. The genome of Lp90 has been sequenced, revealing >3,000 protein coding genes and features associated with environmental adaptation and probiotic activity[3].
