Lactobacillus plantarum MA2 is a functional probiotic strain originally isolated from traditional Chinese Tibetan kefir grains. It has demonstrated significant therapeutic potential in preclinical models for various conditions, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and hypercholesterolemia. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of gut microbiota composition, improvement of the intestinal mucosal barrier (e.g., increasing claudin-1 expression), and reduction of systemic inflammation by inhibiting the LPS-TLR4/MYD88/NLRP3 signaling pathways. In AD models, MA2 and its derived exopolysaccharides (EPS) have been shown to inhibit amyloid-beta (Aβ42) aggregation and attenuate neuroinflammation. Additionally, the strain exhibits strong antioxidant properties both in vitro and in vivo, enhancing the activity of enzymes like superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase.
