Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum No. 14 (recently reclassified as *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum* No. 14) is a specific probiotic strain investigated for its potential therapeutic effects on metabolic disorders. Research in animal models, including diet-induced obese C57BL/6 mice and KK/Ta mice (a model for type 2 diabetes), has demonstrated that oral administration of this strain can significantly reduce white adipose tissue (WAT) accumulation and adipocyte size. The strain appears to improve insulin sensitivity, as evidenced by lower HOMA-IR scores and reduced serum insulin and leptin concentrations. Mechanistically, it has been shown to downregulate the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), particularly in mesenteric adipose tissue, suggesting an anti-inflammatory component to its anti-obesity effects.
