Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum P-8 is a specific probiotic strain of the species Lactobacillus (now reclassified as Lactiplantibacillus) plantarum. It is a live biotherapeutic product isolated from traditionally fermented sour milk in Inner Mongolia, China[5]. This probiotic has been studied for its effects on the gut-brain axis and has demonstrated benefits in alleviating stress and anxiety while enhancing memory and cognitive function in stressed adults[1][4][5]. Mechanistically, L. plantarum P-8 modulates the gut microbiota composition and reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha[5][6][8]. It also shows potential to improve gastrointestinal health by inhibiting opportunistic pathogens, supporting nutrient absorption, reducing inflammation (notably IL-6 and TNF-alpha), and promoting beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium[6][8]. Clinical studies have explored its use for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, eczema (atopic dermatitis), high cholesterol, respiratory tract infections including common cold prevention, diarrhea management, constipation relief, memory enhancement under stress conditions, and modulation of immune responses[2][3][4].
