Lactobacillus plantarum P16 is a probiotic strain isolated from traditional fermented foods, such as Chinese pao cai. It has been extensively researched for its potential therapeutic applications, particularly in the detoxification of heavy metals like lead (Pb). The strain exhibits a high lead-binding capacity and antioxidant properties, which help to mitigate lead-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and organ damage in preclinical models. Additionally, it is studied for its ability to modulate the gut microbiota and improve intestinal barrier function. While primarily a research-stage probiotic strain, it is also mentioned in clinical contexts, such as a trial investigating its effects on the intestinal microbiota of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), where it was administered as part of a compound probiotic preparation.
