Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum P9 (also known as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum P9) is a specific probiotic bacterial strain used as a dietary supplement for gastrointestinal health. It is administered orally and has been evaluated in randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials for its effects on chronic diarrhea and chronic constipation in adults. The mechanism of action involves modulation of the gut microbiome and metabolome—P9 increases beneficial bacteria such as Ruminococcus_B gnavus while reducing potentially harmful taxa like Oscillospiraceae sp., Lachnospiraceae sp., and Herelleviridae. It also enhances the production of bioactive metabolites involved in amino acid and fatty acid metabolism while decreasing metabolites associated with impaired intestinal barrier function (e.g., p-cresol, methylamine). Clinical studies have shown that supplementation with L. plantarum P9 can modestly but significantly reduce diarrhea severity scores in young adults with chronic diarrhea[1][6][8], improve bowel movement frequency in patients with chronic constipation[2], and positively impact quality-of-life measures related to gastrointestinal symptoms.
