Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum S58 (LP.S58) is a probiotic bacterial strain investigated for its potential in managing metabolic disorders, particularly obesity and hyperlipidemia. In preclinical studies, it has demonstrated the ability to attenuate lipid accumulation and weight gain in high-fat diet-fed models, often showing synergistic effects when combined with hull-less barley β-glucan. Its mechanism involves the activation of the AMPK signaling pathway, which subsequently regulates key transcription factors and enzymes involved in lipogenesis (such as PPARγ, SREBP-1c, and FAS) and fatty acid oxidation (such as CPT-1). Additionally, it helps restore gut microbiota balance, improves intestinal barrier function by increasing tight junction protein expression, and reduces systemic inflammation.
