Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum SS18-5 is a probiotic bacterial strain developed through space-induced mutagenesis, resulting in unique properties compared to conventional strains. This strain has demonstrated significant hypoglycemic effects in animal models of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), including lowering fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, and insulin levels; increasing liver glycogen; improving lipid metabolism; reducing oxidative stress and chronic inflammation; alleviating fatty liver disease; and modulating the intestinal microbiota by decreasing harmful bacteria (Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens) while increasing beneficial lactobacilli. The mechanism of action involves regulation of host metabolism and immune modulation via changes in gut microbiota composition and reduction of inflammatory markers[1][3]. It is being investigated primarily as a live biotherapeutic product for metabolic disorders such as T2DM.
