Overview

Lactobacillus plantarum ST-III is a specific probiotic bacterial strain originally isolated from kimchi and traditional Chinese pickles[1][4]. It is classified as a lactic acid bacterium and has been studied for its beneficial effects on gut health, cholesterol metabolism, immune modulation, and intestinal barrier function[2][3][4]. The strain exhibits strong adhesion to intestinal cells, antibacterial activity against pathogens, bile salt resistance (via bile salt hydrolase genes), antioxidant enzyme production (e.g., catalase, glutathione peroxidase), and the ability to lower cholesterol through specific gene clusters such as ssuACB[2]. In preclinical models, it has shown potential in improving autism-like behaviors by modulating gut microbiota composition[4], enhancing tight junction protein expression in intestinal epithelial cells[3], and persisting in the gastrointestinal tract. Its mechanism of action includes competitive exclusion of pathogens, modulation of host immune responses, enhancement of mucosal barrier integrity via upregulation of tight junction proteins, bile salt hydrolysis for improved survival in the GI tract, antioxidant defense mechanisms via enzymatic pathways (catalase/glutathione peroxidase/thioredoxin systems), and cholesterol-lowering effects through metabolic activity on dietary components.
