Lactobacillus plantarum supernatant is a cell-free biologic preparation derived from the probiotic bacterium *Lactobacillus plantarum* (also known as *Lactiplantibacillus plantarum*). It is under investigation as a therapeutic agent for various conditions, including wound healing, cancer, and neuropsychiatric disorders. The supernatant contains a mixture of bioactive metabolites produced by the bacteria, such as lactic acid, antimicrobial peptides (bacteriocins), and phenolic compounds. Its proposed mechanisms of action include direct antimicrobial activity against pathogens like *E. coli* and *Staphylococcus aureus*, as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, partly through the modulation of the NF-κB pathway. In oncology, it is being studied as a chemosensitizer in colorectal cancer. Research suggests it can restore sensitivity to butyrate-induced apoptosis in 5-fluorouracil-resistant cancer cells by upregulating the functional expression of the butyrate transporter SMCT1.
