Overview

The lactobacillus probiotic cocktail is a microbial therapeutic formulation consisting of four specific strains of lactic acid bacteria: *Lactobacillus plantarum*, *Lactobacillus brevis*, *Lactobacillus delbrueckii*, and *Lactobacillus helveticus*. These strains were isolated from traditional dairy products in northeastern Iran. The cocktail is being investigated for its therapeutic potential in treating ulcerative colitis (UC). It functions by modulating the intestinal microbiota, improving intestinal barrier function, and exerting potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic effects. Specifically, it has been shown to down-regulate pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, while up-regulating antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase and catalase. Additionally, it reduces colonic fibrosis by suppressing the expression of pro-fibrotic genes including Acta2 and collagen types Col1a1 and Col1a2.
