Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain of **Lactobacillus reuteri** investigated as a therapeutic microbiome intervention. Publicly described uses include oral supplementation in infantile colic, allergy prevention and gastrointestinal studies, and rectal enema administration in pediatric active distal ulcerative colitis. Its proposed mechanism is not a single receptor-ligand pharmacology but **microbiome-mediated immunomodulation**: colonization of the gastrointestinal tract, modulation of host-mucosal immune responses, increased anti-inflammatory cytokine signaling such as IL-10, and reduction of pro-inflammatory mediators including IL-1 beta, TNF alpha, and IL-8. The strain appears in peer-reviewed clinical literature and has been associated historically with BioGaia-supported development and commercialization of probiotic products, although the exact marketed product names may not always map uniquely to this exact legacy strain because ATCC 55730 was later replaced in some commercial settings by daughter strain DSM 17938.
