Overview

Lactobacillus reuteri BGP-014 is an investigational oral live biotherapeutic product (LBP) being developed by BioGaia Pharma AB for the treatment of mild to moderate active ulcerative colitis (UC). The active ingredient is a specific strain of the bacterium *Lactobacillus reuteri*, designated BGP-014, which is formulated into oral capsules. It is intended for use as an adjunctive therapy alongside standard treatments such as aminosalicylates or corticosteroids. The proposed mechanism of action involves the modulation of gut mucosal immunity, the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokine production, and the restoration of intestinal barrier integrity. BGP-014 is currently undergoing Phase 1 clinical evaluation to assess its safety, tolerability, and exploratory efficacy in patients with active UC.
