Overview

Lactobacillus reuteri CICC6132 is a specific strain of the probiotic species Lactobacillus reuteri (now also classified as Limosilactobacillus reuteri). This bacterium is part of the lactic acid bacteria group and naturally inhabits the human gastrointestinal tract, where it contributes to gut health. Like other strains of L. reuteri, it produces lactic acid and antimicrobial substances such as reuterin, which help inhibit pathogenic microorganisms and maintain a balanced intestinal microbiome[2][3]. The mechanisms by which L. reuteri strains exert their effects include modulation of immune responses (e.g., increasing regulatory T cells), enhancement of gut barrier function, production of beneficial metabolites (such as tryptophan derivatives that activate aryl hydrocarbon receptors), and reduction in inflammation through cytokine regulation[5][6]. Clinical research on various L. reuteri strains has demonstrated benefits for digestive system diseases including infantile colic, diarrhea, constipation, Helicobacter pylori infection, inflammatory bowel disease, functional abdominal pain syndromes, diverticulitis, colorectal cancer prevention adjuncts, and liver diseases[6]. The effects are often strain-specific; however, most evidence supports their use as probiotics for maintaining or restoring gut homeostasis.
