Overview

Lactobacillus reuteri CR20 is a specific strain of the probiotic bacterium *Lactobacillus reuteri* that was originally isolated from the breast milk of healthy women. [NCT00716183] This strain has been clinically investigated for the treatment of lactational mastitis, an inflammatory condition of the breast. [NCT00716183] As a probiotic, its mechanism of action is multifactorial, involving the modulation of the host's microbiota and immune system. It is believed to competitively inhibit pathogenic bacteria, such as *Staphylococcus*, strengthen the mucosal barrier, and produce antimicrobial compounds like reuterin. [3, 8, 11] By promoting an anti-inflammatory environment, it may help alleviate the symptoms of mastitis. [1, 2, 3] A clinical study evaluated the oral administration of *L. reuteri* CR20 in women with lactational mastitis to assess its impact on clinical signs and the bacterial load in breast milk.
