Overview
Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 is a proprietary probiotic strain of *Lactobacillus reuteri* (recently reclassified as *Limosilactobacillus reuteri*) developed by the Swedish company BioGaia AB. [2, 4] It was originally isolated from human breast milk and is one of the most extensively studied probiotic strains, with its safety and efficacy documented in numerous clinical trials across all age groups. [6, 7] It is investigated for a wide range of gastrointestinal and immune-related conditions, including infantile colic, chronic constipation, diarrhea, necrotizing enterocolitis in premature infants, and atopic dermatitis. [10, 11] Its mechanism of action involves modulating the gut microbiome, producing the antimicrobial compound reuterin to inhibit pathogens, strengthening the gut barrier, and modulating the host immune system by reducing inflammatory T-cell responses (e.g., TH1 and TH17). [10]
