Overview

*Lactobacillus reuteri* (recently reclassified as *Limosilactobacillus reuteri*) is a Gram-positive, commensal bacterium widely used as a probiotic. This specific investigational product, studied at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, consists of a 1:1 ratio of two specific strains: DSM 17938 (a daughter strain of ATCC 55730) and ATCC PTA 5289. It is being evaluated for its ability to modulate the maternal and neonatal microbiome and reduce systemic inflammation when administered to pregnant women during the third trimester. The strains are known to produce reuterin, an antimicrobial compound, and modulate the host immune response through interaction with the intestinal and oral mucosa. The product is formulated in various oral delivery systems, including lozenges, chewing gum, and capsules, to assess microbiome transmission from mother to infant during birth.
