Lactobacillus reuteri DSM17648 is a specific strain of the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus reuteri (now also classified as Limosilactobacillus reuteri). It is used primarily as a probiotic or postbiotic for gastrointestinal health. This strain produces antimicrobial substances such as reuterin and reutericyclin, which inhibit the growth of pathogenic Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria without harming beneficial intestinal flora. Its most notable clinical application is in reducing colonization by Helicobacter pylori in the stomach, either as an adjunct to standard eradication therapy or as a stand-alone approach to lower H. pylori load and related gastric symptoms[1][3][6][8]. Clinical studies have shown that supplementation with this strain can increase H. pylori eradication rates when combined with standard triple therapy and reduce gastrointestinal symptoms such as indigestion, constipation, abdominal pain, and treatment-related adverse effects[1][6]. The mechanism involves highly targeted co-aggregation with H. pylori in the stomach, leading to its removal via natural digestive processes rather than direct killing[8].
