Overview

Lactobacillus reuteri SD5865 is a specific probiotic bacterial strain of the species *Lactobacillus reuteri*. It has been studied for its effects on glucose metabolism and incretin hormone release in humans. In clinical trials, daily oral administration of L. reuteri SD5865 increased glucose-stimulated secretion of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and GLP-2, as well as insulin and C-peptide levels in healthy volunteers, suggesting enhanced incretin effect and improved glucose-dependent insulin secretion[3][8]. The mechanism appears to involve modulation of gut microbiota composition leading to increased incretin release rather than direct effects on peripheral or hepatic insulin sensitivity[3][8]. This strain is also used in fermented dairy products such as yogurt for its probiotic benefits, which may include supporting digestive health, immune function, intestinal barrier integrity, and potentially reducing gastrointestinal infections[4][7].
