Overview

Lactobacillus reuteri V3401 is a specific probiotic strain of the species formerly known as Lactobacillus reuteri (now classified as Limosilactobacillus reuteri). It is a live biotherapeutic product used primarily for its beneficial effects on gut health and metabolic parameters. This strain has been studied in adults with metabolic syndrome, where it was shown to reduce inflammatory biomarkers such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (sVCAM-1), and to modify the gastrointestinal microbiome by increasing the proportion of Verrucomicrobia. The proposed mechanism involves modulation of gut microbiota composition, reduction of systemic inflammation, and potential improvement in insulin resistance markers[3][6]. It is administered orally, typically in capsule form containing 5 × 10^9 colony-forming units per dose[3][6]. The primary indication under investigation is metabolic syndrome; other uses for related strains include gastrointestinal disorders such as constipation, diarrhea, colic in infants, Helicobacter pylori infection adjunct therapy, and high cholesterol[1][2].
