Lactobacillus rhamnosus + Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotic combination drug composed of two live bacterial strains—Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus acidophilus—as its active ingredients. It is classified as a live biotherapeutic product and microbial therapy. One prominent branded formulation is Respecta, which specifically utilizes the strains L. rhamnosus HN001 and L. acidophilus La-14, often in conjunction with lactoferrin. The combination is designed to restore and maintain a healthy microbiome in the gut and vaginal tract. Its mechanism of action involves colonizing mucosal surfaces, producing lactic acid to maintain an acidic environment that inhibits pathogens like Gardnerella vaginalis, and modulating host immune responses by inhibiting pro-inflammatory pathways such as NF-κB and reducing levels of cytokines like IL-1β and TNF-α. It has been clinically investigated for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, ulcerative colitis, and the prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
