Overview

Lactobacillus rhamnosus CRL 1505 (also known as Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus CRL 1505) is a specific probiotic bacterial strain originally isolated from goat milk. It is classified as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) and is recognized for its potent immunomodulatory properties, particularly its ability to enhance respiratory mucosal immunity. The strain's mechanism involves a heat-stable peptidoglycan (PG05) that interacts with the innate immune system, modulating the activity of macrophages and dendritic cells to improve the clearance of respiratory pathogens. While it has been used in functional foods and dietary supplements to prevent infections, it is currently being evaluated in a clinical setting by the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital as a component of a multi-strain probiotic nasal rinse for patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) following nasal surgery.
