Overview

Lactobacillus rhamnosus DM02 is a probiotic strain being investigated for its potential renal protective effects in patients with stage 3–5 chronic kidney disease (CKD). Developed by The First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, the therapy aims to modulate the gut-kidney axis by reducing the abundance of pathogenic gut bacteria, specifically Escherichia coli. By altering the gut microbiota composition, DM02 is intended to decrease the production and circulating levels of uremic toxins like indoxyl sulfate, which are known to contribute to CKD progression and cardiovascular complications. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 0 clinical trial in China to assess its impact on the gut microbiome and clinical outcomes in CKD patients.
