Overview

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is a well-characterized probiotic bacterial strain being investigated by the Campus Bio-Medico University for its potential to prevent relapses in patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). VKC is a chronic, severe allergic eye disease primarily affecting children and adolescents, characterized by ocular inflammation. The therapeutic approach involves the oral administration of LGG to modulate the systemic immune system and the gut-eye axis, thereby reducing the frequency and severity of inflammatory relapses. This represents a novel management strategy for VKC, shifting focus from traditional topical treatments to systemic immunomodulation via the microbiome.
