Overview

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG + Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 is an investigational combination of two live probiotic bacterial strains. It was studied by the Medical University of Warsaw in the NCT03032354 clinical trial, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in children with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus. [1, 7] The intervention aimed to preserve residual pancreatic beta-cell function by modulating the gut microbiota to influence the immune system and prevent further islet cell destruction. [4] The trial results, published in 2021, showed that the probiotic combination did not have a significant effect on maintaining beta-cell function compared to placebo. [2, 3]
