Drug intelligence / Profile preview
An investigational probiotic supplement comprising two bacterial strains, *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* LGG® and *Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis* BB-12®, being developed and studied by Sheppard Pratt Health System for psychiatric disorders. It is currently in a Phase 2 clinical trial for the prevention of relapse in individuals recently hospitalized for bipolar depression. [2, 3] The proposed mechanism of action involves modulating the gut-brain axis and reducing gut inflammation, which is believed to be a contributing factor in the symptoms of bipolar disorder. [4, 5] Previous research by the same team indicated that this probiotic combination was effective in reducing rehospitalization rates for patients with acute mania. [6, 8]
