Overview

This synbiotic intervention, developed by the **University of Helsinki**, consists of a specific mixture of four probiotic bacterial strains—*Lactobacillus rhamnosus* GG, *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* LC705, *Bifidobacterium breve* Bb99, and *Propionibacterium freudenreichii* ssp. *shermanii* JS—combined with prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS). The formulation is designed to modulate the neonatal gut microbiota and promote immune system maturation to prevent the development of allergic diseases. It is typically administered to pregnant women during the final weeks of gestation and subsequently to their infants for the first six months of life. Clinical research, including a Phase 2/3 trial conducted at the Skin and Allergy Hospital of Helsinki University, has demonstrated that this synbiotic approach significantly reduces the cumulative incidence of eczema and IgE-associated eczema in high-risk children, representing a microbiome-modulating strategy for allergy prevention.
