Overview

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG LA801 is a specific probiotic strain of *Lactobacillus rhamnosus* GG developed and marketed by Laboratoires PiLeJe. It is formulated as a Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) under the brand name Babybiane Imedia, specifically intended for the nutritional management of acute diarrhea in infants and young children, including cases associated with gastroenteritis, antibiotic therapy, or hospital-acquired infections. The strain functions by enhancing the intestinal barrier through the induction of mucin secretion and tight junction protein expression, competing with pathogens for adhesion sites, and modulating the immune response by increasing mucosal secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA) and stimulating interferon-gamma production. While widely used for acute diarrhea, a clinical trial investigating its use for the prevention of nosocomial diarrhea in children was terminated.
