Overview

Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 (also known as Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus GR-1 following a taxonomic reclassification) is a specific probiotic bacterial strain extensively researched for women's urogenital health. [18] Discovered and developed by Dr. Gregor Reid and Dr. Andrew Bruce, the strain was originally isolated from the distal urethra of a healthy woman. [1, 20] L. rhamnosus GR-1 is a biologic, live therapeutic product and not a conventional small molecule drug. It is most frequently used in combination with another probiotic strain, *Lactobacillus reuteri* RC-14. [1, 2, 3, 4] The mechanism of action is multifaceted; it does not have a single biological target but instead functions by adhering to urogenital tissues, competitively displacing pathogenic bacteria, producing antimicrobial substances such as lactic acid to maintain an acidic pH, and modulating local immune responses. [16, 21] This probiotic is primarily used to restore and maintain a healthy vaginal flora, and to treat and prevent conditions like bacterial vaginosis (BV), urinary tract infections (UTIs), and vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infections). [17, 18] Clinical studies have also explored its potential in reducing Group B Streptococcus colonization in pregnant women. [17] The strain is manufactured by Chr. Hansen and is a key ingredient in various commercial products, which are typically administered orally in capsule form. [1, 5, 11]
